An AFO, or Ankle Foot Orthosis, is a specialized medical device that is worn on the leg from below the knee onto the foot.  There are many types of AFOs and they are used for many different reasons.

AFOs are made according to the specific needs of each person. They are made in many different styles according to the medical, biomechanical and environmental needs of the individual.

KAFOs provide stability to the knee and foot when needed during the stance phase of ambulation and knee hyperextension control from midstance to the terminal stance phase in the gait cycle. Both the orthotic knee joint and ankle joints have a multitude of different control functions including (but not limited to) the following:

Carbon fibre is a lightweight and strong material that can be used as the primary material in an Ankle-Foot Orthoses. Carbon fibre AFOs can be pre-made or custom-made products. It is possible to create all types of AFOs from carbon fibre (solid type, jointed type, GRAFOs, PDEs & leaf spring).

Diabetic wound care & offloading shoes can help reduce foot pressure to provide targeted offloading when wounds or ulcerations are present.

Traditional KAFO''s only lock in full extension, which provides lower limb stability, but also causes patients to ambulate with gait deviations that may lead to other problems over time. Since traditional KAFO''s do not allow for knee flexion while the patient is amulating, they also require more energy to use. Stance control orthoses (SCO''s) on the other hand, allow the patient''s kene to flex during the swing phase of gait and block flexion in stance phase for stability. An SCO''s ability to provide knee flexion during swing phase allows patients to walk with less effort and a more symmetrical gait pattern.
